The Roland Juno-106 was a hybrid digital/analogue polyphonic synth manufactured by Roland Corporation in 1984. Korg acknowledged this fact by integrating their M1 piano back on later incarnations of the X range, such as in the X5D synth and The M1's piano was so bright and metallic sounding that it found its niche in Dance/Electronica and some Latin Music where it could cut through the mix easily. The 01/Wpro even went a step further and added another even more realistic Acoustic Piano. These were replaced by more realistic versions (the Acoustic Piano in the 01/W was radically different and sounded more oriented for classical music). Particularly missing were the M1 Acoustic Piano, and some of the M1 Electric Piano sounds. The 01/W only had a few of the M1's samples. There was also a subsequent 05R/W, which was based on the Korg X5. While the first initial of the name has always been pronounced "O" (the vowel) it is actually a zero. The success of the AI² architecture ensured it was used in the majority of subsequent Korg synths of the 1990s. The workstation/ROMpler was based on AI², an improved version of the AI (Advanced Integrated) Synthesis technology found in the M1. The Korg 01/W was a workstation synthesizer, released in 1991, and was intended to replace the M1 and T series. The first version used the "black and gold" color scheme. The earliest units of the original version lacked ARP's innovative "Proportional Pitch Control" pads, but instead had a pitch bend knob like those found on Mark I ARP Odysseys, but featured a copyright infringing version of a Moog filter that was later discontinued, though no actual lawsuit ever took place. The difference in these later two versions was primarily the mounting of the keyboard. Three versions of the Axxe were manufactured, the last two containing orange silkscreening and a slightly modified case, similar to ARP's Mark III Odyssey. Noteworthy is the addition of sample-and-hold and the ability to pass external audio through the filter (in the tradition of the Minimoog).
Modulation is also rather inflexible but can be applied to nearly every section of the synthesizer. It has a single VCO (producing two different waveforms) that is passed through a basic low-pass filter and VCA. As a cheaper, scaled-down version of the Odyssey, the Axxe was simplified to the point of becoming, arguably, the most standard analog synthesizer. The ARP Axxe is a monophonic analog synthesizer created by ARP in 1975.
It was Wendy Carlos' 1968 Switched-On Bach which featured Carlos' custom-built modular Composers Eric Siday and Chris Swansen were also among the first customers, with Paul Beaver being the first to use a modular Moog on a record in 1967. Lothar and the Hand People began using the modular Moog in 1965. The first Moog system was bought by choreographer Alwin Nikolais. Moog also established standards for analog synthesizer control interfacing, with a logarithmic one volt-per-octave pitch control and a separate pulse triggering signal.
Moog employed his theremin company to manufacture and market his synthesizers which, unlike the synthesizers created by Don Buchla (the other prominent figure in the early history of the synthesizer), featured a piano-style keyboard as a significant portion of the user interface. In 1964, Robert Moog created one of the first modular voltage-controlled music synthesizers, and demonstrated it at the AES convention that year.
